  1. 1CENSUSA survey carried out by the government of
all households and the people living in them, also their income and jobs. This is carried out every 10 years
  2. 2GATEKEEPERA person or group of people who know the target population and have the power to grant the researcher access to their research population.
E.g. A headteacher being a gate keeper for students.
  3. 3ACCESSYou need this to get to the people you intend to do research on. It is very similar to consent.
E.g. You need access to do research at a prison.
  4. 4NON-RANDOM SAMPLINGThis is where your chances of getting into the sample group are not left to chance and you do not have an equal chance as other people.
  5. 5PURPOSIVEThe sample group are chosen because they are likely to be relevant to the study. The researcher chooses the individual that fit the nature of the research.
E.g. Hodkinson studied goths and deliberately sought them out to research.
  6. 6VOLUNTEERWhen a person offers to take part in the research process themselves. It is a variation of snowball sampling. You can gain access to volunteers via ads on social media and in newspapers.
  7. 7SYSTEMATICTaking every 'nth' name from the sampling frame until you get the right number for your sample.
E.g. Picking every 3rd name on a school register.
  8. 8SAMPLING FRAMEThis is the source from what the sample is taken from. They are often easy to access but it depends on the research topic.
E.g. Register, prison records, Yellow Pages.
  9. 9SAMPLEThe people who you are completing research on. Samples can be big or small and have to represent your research population as best as possible.
    E.g. Prisoners, students, elderly people
  10. 10RANDOMEveryone in the sampling frame has an equal chance of being involved in the research. Individuals are not picked for any particular reason.
  11. 11SNOWBALLMaking contact with a person who will then introduce you to others to research. This sample is often used for hard to reach target populations.
E.g. A drug user introducing you to their friends, who also do drugs
  12. 12STRATIFIEDThe sample group is divided into categories to be representative of the target population. This is often time consuming.
E.g. Dividing based on age, gender, race, ect.
  13. 13OPPORTUNITYThe sample group is formed at a certain place where the target population are likely to be found. It is similar to purposive.
E.g. Going to a school to research students.
  14. 14QUOTAThe researcher decided how many people need to be in each category in the sample and goes out looking for the right number until it is filled.
E.g. Wanting to find 100 people- 32 male, 68 female.
  15. 15REPRESENTATIVEThe sample group is typical of the wider research population. In other words, it is
high in accuracy and therefore can be generalised.
