- 1What is lossy compression?An algorithm that decreases file size as well as the accuracy of the data being reduced. Information is lost in the process permanently.
- 2What type of file is lossy compression used on?Image files because: some loss in quality is ok, it is unlikely that it will be noticed and the file will be smaller than lossless.
- 3What type of file should lossy compression not be used on?Text files as loss of data would make the file unreadable
- 4What is lossless compression?It reduces the file size while preserving all the information from the original.
- 5What type of file would lossless be used on?Text files as it retains all of it's information file being smaller in size.
- 6Why is compression used?Compressed files download quicker as well as saving money as it uses less bandwidth/ data usage.
(each megabit = 1 million bits), (measured in Mbps, Megabits per second). - 7What is run length encoding?It is used on images that has a lot of repeat pixels (simple images).
- 8What is dictionary encoding?It replaces data/groups of characters with symbols/tokens. A dictionary is used to say what token matches what groups of characters (word). The dictionary is used to replace tokens with the original text when decompressed. The dictionary must be with the file or itnis unreadable.
- 9How would you improve on the two of these types of compression?By combining Run-length and Dictionary to have an even higher compression ratio.
