- 1In a typical bullying situation, there seems to be various roles that are taken by the different people participating. The three most commonly known are as follows; the bully, the victim and the bystander. A bystander is a person who is present at an event or incident but does not take part. We often put the bystander into a category of innocence and unawareness however, I believe that there’s no such thing as an innocent bystander. A bystander has the ability to intervene in a possibly fatal bullying circumstance but the bystander is known as someone who does the opposite. They will not take part in assisting the victim at all and will get involved in any way. If you’re a spectator, you’re a participant and it is your duty to intervene.So, are bystanders capable enough to stop bullying in time? A statistic by the U.S. poll of children says that when bystanders intervene, they can stop bullying within 10 seconds on average. However, even though most bystanders don’t like to watch bullying, less than 20% try to stop it. Another distressing statistic states that in many playground observations, peers intervened in significantly more episodes than adults did (11% of episodes versus 4%). Sometimes your friends can be your main source of support in these situations as empathy is the most important virtue in bullying.
