  1. 1The Working Memory Model- Baddeley and Hitch (1974)3 part working memory model as alternative to short term store in MSM. These parts include Central Executive, Visuospatial Sketchpad and Phonological Loop.
  2. 2Central ExecutiveDirects attention to particular tasks, co-ordinates multi tasking and allocates info to slave systems. Capcity thought to be limited and no storage.
  3. 3Visuo-spatial Sketchpad- inner eyeHolds visual imagery such as familiar face. Processes and temporarily stores info on size, shape and colour. Allows us to visualise and work out spatial relationships. Limited capacity.
  4. 4Articulatory-phonological loop- inner voice and earUsed in speech production as verbal rehearsal system to hold things we want to say and speech perception to hold info we have just heard. Thought to hold only 2 seconds of verbal info.
  5. 5EXTRA- Episodic bufferLimited general store that temporarily holds representations that combine verbal, visual and spatial information and possibly info not covered by slave systems e.g semantics and musical info.
  6. 6Support- Baddeley and Hitch (1976)Dual task technique to demonstrate existence of separate components of the working memory.
  7. 7Case study- KFHad specific problem with verbal rather than visual STM. Suggest PL was damages rather than his VXX and suppots idea of separeate components within STM devoted to different tasks.
  8. 8Support- Gathercole (1990)Found children with reading problems had poor memory span and difficulties saying whether words rhymed which suggest possible problem with this area of the working memory.
