Water Cycle Test
Karten in diesem Stapel (34)
- 1What are the first three steps in the water cycle?1. Evaporation 2. Condensation 3. Precipitation
- 2What are the five things that could happen after evaporation, condensation, and precipitation?Sublimation, Percolation, Infiltration, Surface run-off, and or transpiration.
- 3What is evaporation? The changing of water from a liquid to a gas.
- 4What is condensation?The changing of a water from a gas to a liquid.
- 5What is precipitation? When water molecules form into drops and become heavy enough to fall to the Earth's surface.
- 6What is sublimation? The changing of water from a solid to a gas.
- 7What is transpiration? When moisture is carried through plants from roots to leaves, turns into a vapor, and is released back into the atmosphere.
- 8What is surface run-off?When water flows from higher ground to lower ground.
- 9What is infiltration? When water fills the empty spaces of soil.
- 10What is percolation?Ground water moving in the full area below the Earth's surface.
- 11What is groundwater?Water on the ground.
- 12What is water vapor? The gas form of water.
- 13How does the water cycle purify water? It only takes up molecules that are light enough which is water.
- 14How does the water cycle distribute water? It distributes materials because of the clouds moving.
- 15What are three positive things about the water cycle? It is continuous because it recycles water, we always have clean water because of it, and it keeps us alive.
- 16What are three negative things about the water cycle? It can cause floods, it takes a long time, and it can distribute pollution.
- 17Describe the troposphere. It is up to 12 km. Rain, snow, storms, and most clouds are here. It contains almost all the mass of the atmosphere. As the altitude increases, temperature decreases (stops at -60 C)
- 18Describe the stratosphere.12-50 km. Absorbs the UV rays of the sun. Lower part is cold, upper part is warmer. In the middle there is a layer of ozone that traps heat and protects Earth from dangerous UV rays.
- 19Describe the mesosphere.50-80 km. Burn up meteoroids. -80C.
- 20Describe the thermosphere.Abocve 80 km. Only .0001 as dense as air. No definite outer limit. HOT because the sun hits here first, but you wouldn't feel warm because the gas molecules are moving so fast. Nitrogen and oxygen convert the sun's energy into heat. 2 layers: Ionosphere- Aurora Borealis occur hear. Exosphere- Phone and TV satellites orbit the Earth here.
- 21What kind of pressure will a high pressure system bring?Fair weather.
- 22What kind of weather will a low pressure system bring?Brings bad weather and storms.
- 23What is humidity? The amount of moisture in the air.
- 24What is a warm front and what happens?A warm front is a boundary between two air masses, and it is warm air that replaces cold air.
- 25What is a cold front and what happens?A boundary between two air masses, and it is cold air replacing the warm air.
- 26What is a stationary front?Neither warm or cold, and it is stationary and not moving.
- 27what causes the changing of the seasons? The tilt of the Earth, causing the sun to face different ways.
- 28When is it summer northern hemisphere? When the sun is directly facing it.
- 29When is it winter in the northern hemisphere? When the sun is directly facing the southern hemisphere.
- 30Why do other planets have more extreme seasons?Because they are closer or further away from the sun.
- 31What is the ocean's role?To collect excess heat from the sun.
- 32What is heat capacity? The amount of heat that something can absorb.
- 33Does water or land have a greater heat capacity?Water because it can absorb more heat.
- 34What role does the ocean play in global warming? It plays the role of absorbing excess heat from the sun to cool down the Earth.
