  1. 1HardWareHardware is the actual elements of a computer such as a Hard Drive.
  2. 2SoftwareSoftware Is the programmed elements of a computer that are used such as a Word Processor.
  3. 3System SoftwareSystem Software is Software used for the System itself e.g. Defragmentor, Firewall
  4. 4Application SoftwareThis is Software such as a Word Processor, where the User can use a Application to do something on a computer.
  5. 5Operating SystemThe Operating System is what the Computer runs on e.g. Windows, Linux
  6. 6Utility ProgramA utility Program is software used to look after the computer system such as a Firewall or a De-fragmentor.
  7. 7Library ProgramA Library Program is something that is a pre written routine only used when the computer needs to, usually as dll files.
  8. 8CompilerA Compiler is a translator that Compiles all the source Code and then can be run as a executable file. If a Error is found the program will stop being compiled and the error will need to be found. Any Library's are linked into the Executable object code. The Object Code produced is pure binary meaning it is very secure. When running the file since the program has been compiled there is no need for a IDE and is run very fast. A example of a IDE that uses a Compiler is Lazarus.
  9. 9AssemblerA Assembler translates Assembly Language into Machine Code. These are mostly used when developing a low level control system and working directly with computer components.
  10. 10InterpreterA Interpreter Translates high level programming language to machine code. Unlike a Compiler it executes the source code a line at a time. The Source code file is required to be translated whilst running. If a error is found the program will stop at that line meaning some of the code has been run but another section does not work. Library's and Units are loaded and unloaded into the program when required.
  11. 11General Purpose Application SoftwareThis type of software is where the software can be used for multiple different things. A example of a General Purpose Application Software would be a Word Processor.
  12. 12Special Purpose Application SoftwareSpecial Purpose Application Software is used for one specific task, such as a Web Browser.
  13. 13Bespoke Application SoftwareThis is Software specially designed for a specific use, such as a company needing a program tailor made to their specific needs. A example of specific software could be Apex used for students.
  14. 14Machine CodeMachine Code are simple instructions that are executed by the CPU.
  15. 15Assembly LanguageAssembly Language is low level code used by a programmer, usually as symbols e.g. LD = 0000/0001
  16. 161st Gen Programming LanguageThis is pure Machine code as 1's and 0's, usually entered into the earliest if computers by hand. This can be fast and efficient, and can make use of specific registers but code has to be re-written and is difficult to edit or update.
  17. 172nd Gen Programming Language2nd Gen Programming Languages are Assembly Code, using codes to represent binary digits.
  18. 183rd Gen Programming Language3rd Gen Programming Language is using Imperitive Language, where the code is executed line by line defined in a sequence by a programmer. This can easily be ported to other systems and processors and can save alot of time as 1 line of imperitive code could equal 3-4 lines of machine code. However code produced may not take advantage of specific features e.g. registers like 1st/2nd gen code.
  19. 194th Gen programming LanguageA 4th Gen Programming Language is Declatarive code where the Programmer declares what should be performed and not how to perform it. A example of a 4th Gen Programming Language would be CSS used for HTML webpages.
