- 27Which direction does the ray of light bend when it enters a less dense medium? It creates an equal angle of incidence and goes back to it's original shape.
- 28Define Density. How tightly packed together the atoms are in a particular material.
- 29Why does refraction form this shape?Because of the light slowing down and changing direction when it reaches a denser medium and because of the light getting faster and going back to it's an original shape once it reaches the original density.
- 30What happens when a single ray of white light is refracted by a triangular glass prism? Each spectrum of the rainbow is refracted as seperate rays of light because each colour is refracted slightly differently.
- 31When does maximum diffraction take place? When the gap is the same size as the wave length.
- 32What causes the waves to spread out more? The gap they diffract through increasing.
- 33How to get full marks when describing how houses etc. gain signal via diffraction. (3)- The waves are initially in a straight line.
- They hit an obstacle.
- Which causes the waves to diffract. - 34What is diffraction? The spreading of waves when they pass through a gap or move past an obstacle.
- 35Give 2 examples of diffraction?1. Diffraction of light. - Longitudinal. (Little diffraction means that the Hubble Space Telescope can recieve very clear images.)
2. Diffraction of ultrasonic waves. - Transverse. (Used in ultrasonic scans: emits the waves and then refract from the tisue boundries inside the womb.) - 36Why can people in hill dense areas sometimes have poor signal? The radio waves pass over the hill and diffract however they don't spread out enough behind the hill and so they can't reach the houses.

- 38What 3 states can sound waves only travel in? Why?Liquid, gas & solid because there must be particles.
- 39What is the relationship between density and how easy it is for sound waves to travel? Why?The denser the object the easier it is for sound to pass through it because there are more particles.
- 40What 5 things should you include when explaining why sounds can be heard further way in denser mediums?1. Denser means that the particles are closer together.
2. This means that there is less distance for it to travel which means that it can travel further.
3. Sound is caused by vibrations.
4. This makes the particles bump into each other.
5. This makes a wave which travels to her ear. - 41What is an echo? When sounds reflect off of bare walls.
- 42Why aren't echos heard with fabric walls?Because the fabric absorbs the sound.
- 43Why aren't echos heard on uneven walls?Because the sound waves are reflected broken up and scattered.
- 44What is the relationship between temperature and the speed of sound? The warmer the air, the faster the speed of sound.

- 71Why can we use microwaves for satellite TV?Because they can break through the atmosphere.
- 72Why are microwaves good for beaming signals from one place to another?Because they don't spread out as much as radio waves.
- 73What can Radio Waves replace? An example?Cables. Eg. Bluetooth.
- 74How has satellite TV improved watching TV? Why? (2)They don't have to diffract around objects like radio waves making a stronger signal and they're more direct. This is because microwaves come from the sky.

- 82What are radio wavelengths from 1m to 100m used for? Why?Local radio stations and emergency services because their range is limited to the area around the transmitter.
- 83What are radio wavelengths over 100m used for? Why?National and international radio stations because they have a much larger range.
- 84What are optical fibres and what stops the light from escaping?Very thin glass fibres and so the light reflects off of the walls meaning that the signals stay in the fibre and none are lost.
- 85What is the Doppler effect? The change in the observed wavelength (and frequency) of waves due to the motion of the source of waves.
- 86What happens if the source of the wave come towards you?The waves increase in frequency and decrease in wave length and so the sound would seem higher/the light may appear to be violet.
- 87What causes the frequency of a wave to increase? The waves compress.
- 88What would happen s the source of wave moves away? The frequency of the wave would lower in frequency/increase in wavelength and so it would seem a deeper sound/could appear as a red light.
- 89What would happen is you were inside the source of wave?It would all remain at one frequency and not change.
- 90What would happen if the source of wave was travelling faster? The frequency would increase because the waves are moving past faster.
- 91What is Red Shift?Light from other galaxies appearing more red than they are.
- 92Why is it called Red Shift? The light waves are stretched out if a star or galaxy is moving away from us which increases the wave length which makes the spectrum of light shift to the red part.
- 93What is Blue Shift? When the opposite happens the wavelength as a star or planet moves towards us.
- 94What was discovered in 1929? (2)- The light from distant galaxies was red-shifted.
- The further a galaxy is; the bigger its re-shift is. - 95This means that? (2)- The distant galaxies are moving away from us.
- The greater distance a galaxy is from us; the greater the speed that it moves away from us. - 96Which concludes that? The universe is expanding.
- 97Describe the 3 steps of the big bang theory?1. It started as a extremely small singularity which rapidly expanded; releasing dense energy.
2. This energy began to turn into matter.
3. The matter gradually began to form the stars and planets. - 98How is Red-Shift evidence for the big bang?It shows that the galaxies are moving away from us.
- 99How is cosmo microwave background radiation evidence of the big bang? The presence of it shows that the universe is expanding because when it does it cools which caused the detectable microwaves.
- 100What should scientists do if a theory is not supported by new data? (2)- Check reliability & accuracy.
- Come up with a new theory.
