  1. 1DataAny kind of information that has been formatted in a specific way. Different types include text, audio, video and images.
  2. 2Devices/componentsUsed as a generic term to mean computers, peripheral hardware, mobile telephones, manufacturing plant, environment monitors, etc.
  3. 3PeripheralAny device, such as a printer, attached to a computer to expand its functionality.
  4. 4Data exchangePassing data between devices/components and users over a network.
  5. 5A device or programme used to encode or decode data.Codec
  6. 6Internet packetsA formatted block of data sent over networks and the internet. A packet contains the addresses of the sender and destination, the data itself and error checking.
  7. 7VoIPVoice over Internet Protocol - a method of data exchange using internet protocols that allow voice and multimedia communication over the internet, rather than using telephone networks (e.g. Skype). It can be used to digitise an analogue voice signal, compress it and split it into internet packets for transmission - then reverses this at the receiving end.
  8. 8Wireless networkA method of data exchange between a computer and a network or other device which which does not use cables of any kind but uses radio waves or infrared communication.
  9. 9Fibre opticGlass or plastic cables used to transmit data using reflected light.
  10. 10InfraredA type of short range data transfer which is used in TV remote controls and other devices.
  11. 11MicrowaveShort wavelength radio transmissions which work at very high frequencies over long distances e.g. bluetooth, Earth to satellites in space.
  12. 12SatelliteData transmitted from Earth to a satellite and back using high frequency radio signals, e.g. SatNavs, global communication systems.
  13. 13MbpsMegabits per second - a measure of speed that data is being transmitted at a rate of one million bits per second.
  14. 14GbpsGigabits per second - a measure of speed that data is being transmitted at a rate of one thousand million bits per second.
  15. 15Sunspot activityEnergy released from the sun which can disrupt data transmissions.
  16. 16Geostationary satelliteA satellite orbiting the Earth at a height of 35,786 km and at the same speed that the Earth is rotating which therefore appears to be stationary above a single point on the Earth's surface, which can be used for weather forecasting, television broadcasting and defence and intelligence gathering.
  17. 17BitThe amount of data transfered within a unit of time (e.g. per second).
  18. 18ByteA unit of digital information containing 8 bits.
  19. 19Simplex transmissionMode of transmission which sends data in one direction only e.g. a radio broadcast.
  20. 20Full duplex transmissionMode of transmission which allows two-way communication at the same time, e.g. telephone (land or mobile).
  21. 21Half-duplex transmissionMode of transmission which is two-way but where the devices to not transmit at the same time e.g. some network systems.
  22. 22Parallel transmissionData transfer where a number of bits of data are transmitted over an equal number of wires/channels at the same time, which is used over short distances.
  23. 23Serial transmissionData transfer where bits are transmitted one at a time over a single wire/channel which can be used over large distances.
  24. 24USBUniversal Serial Bus - a transmission method used to make many of the connections to a computer look the same; used in mobiles, memory sticks and MP3 players
  25. 25Bi-directional transmissionTransmitting data in both directions.
  26. 26Client-side processingThe use of scripting language to create code that provides interactivity on web pages e.g. movement of a mouse over a particular part of a web page which triggers interactive i.e. an advert to be displayed.
  27. 27Server-side processingWhen the interaction between a web page and a computer is processed through a server.
