- 1What does computer control mean?Computer control means that a computer is part of the control system. The computer is normally used to run the control program.
- 2What is a sensor?A sensor is a device designed to measure some physical quantities in its environment. An example might be a heat sensor that measure the temperature in a room or a pressure sensitive mat that detects someone walking over it.
- 3what is ADC?All computers need digital data in order to process it further. Digital data only has two values either 0 and 1 or on and off. In order for the data collected by the sensor to be handled by the computer, it needs to be converted from an analogue signal to a digital signal. To do this, a special piece of hardware called ADC.
- 4What is processing?Once the input data from the sensors has been received by the computer, it can then begin to process it. The data will be compared against a set of rules which have been programmed into the control system and a decision will be made. The results are and output of some kind. This is called processing
- 5What is output?Once the processing has taken place and a decision has been made, the computer will send the correct signal to the output device. Sending the message and the resulting action is known as the 'output' stage.
- 6What are the two types of computer control systems?-open loop system
-feedback system - 7What is an open loop system? An open loop system only looks at its input signal in order to decide what to do.
- 8Give an example of and open loop system.Switching on a light, it does not check if the bulb is actually working.
- 9What are the advantages of using an open loop system?- It is very simple
- All it does it take in a command or value
- Produces an output action of some kind - 10What is a feedback system?A feedback system is where the output of a system affects the input.
- 11What are the advantages of a feedback system? It has more precise controls.
- 12What are the disadvantages of using a feedback system? It is more complicated to make.
- 13Give an example of a feedback system.- Central heating system with a set temperature control.
- Fridge with a set temperature control.
- Clothes dryer that can sense how moist the clothes are. - 14What is an actuator? An actuator is often a part of computer control system. The actuator is a mechanical device or motor that carries out the action or decision made by the control system.
- 15Give an example of a actuator. The lens of a digital camera moves in and out according to how much zoom is wanted. In this case the actuator is a tiny electric motor that is controlled a computer control system inside the camera.
- 16What are the examples of a computer control at home?- Washing machine
- Microwave cooker
- Dishwashers
- Remote control television
- Central heating system
- Burglar alarm system - 17What are the examples of computer controls at work?- Air conditioning systems
- Lifts
- Automatic doors
- Factory robots - 18what are the examples of computer control outside the home?- Traffic light systems
- Car park barriers
- Cars- engine management system
- Lifts
- Rides at a theme park
- Computer controlled lighting systems at discos and concerts - 19what are the advantages of computer control?- Can operate 24Hrs a day without taking a break
-Can work without holidays or sick days
- Will work without any wages
- Will accurately repeat actions
- Can process data from sensors very quickly
- Can make accurate and reliable decisions
- Can be used in dangerous and awkward environments - 20what are the disadvantages of computer control?- The software for the control system is specialist and may cost a lot of money to develop
- If the computer malfunctions the system will not work
- If there is a power cut the system will not work
- The computer cannot react to unexpected events as perhaps a person could. It can only respond in the way that it has been programmed - 21—
