  1. 1Uncon Influences- Subliminal ad's: Vicary's popcorn experiment where 50% more people ate popcorn after the sign flashed up to eat it. Probably a hoax. Subliminal ad's banned in UK&US.Subliminal mere exposure effect (Kunst-Wilson & Zajonc, 80)-
10 Octogons presented briefly, P's told to pay attention to flashes, and to verbally acknowledge the when a flash occured.
P's were asked two Q's; Which one was prev shown (to test explicit memory), which one do you like better (indirect memory test).
  2. 2Results of SMEE- A chance performance of ~48% correct recognition. 60% preferred old stimuli. 'Mere exposure effect'; tendency to prefer things you've seen before.Further research (Mandler et al, 87)-
Chance percent of correctly recognised items seen before. ~60% chose items prev seen on liking, brightness and darkness.
Same method as SMEE but different judgements at test, N=12
  3. 3Priming without awareness (Stark et al, 82)- P's studied 96 words, asked if they have seen it before and to complete the fragment (hangman). Completion rate was much higher for studied words, meaning priming had occured, the likelihood was the same regardless if the word was remembered.Priming (Mitchell 06)-
P's asked to id parts of pics they had seen 17 years prev. 1/3 of the p's could not remember being in the experiment, but everyone showed some kind of priming effect.
  4. 4Implicit and uncon learning (Nissen 87)- A 10 trial cont repeating sequence vs random seq. P's are faster to respond when a target follows a repeated seq compared to random. Amnesiac's didn't notice a sequence but were still faster to respond to the repeating.Implicit learning (Sanchez, 10)-
Guitar hero task: trained adults 61% accurate, 51% untrained. No sig difference between id of a pattern in the two groups.
Memory was evident in performance but not explicit knowledge.
  5. 5Contextual cuing (Chun, 98)- Recognising a display or pattern and being able to recognise quicker a detail in a previously shown pattern than a novel one. Found that it was ~100ms quicker. Recognition memory was a near chance perf of 52%Implicit learning & mem-
subliminal learning is the uncon presentation that you may not 'see' but your subcon does. Mem is whether the brain recognises the cues eg priming. Demo's of implicit mem do not demo learning. For it to happen, probing must happen after learning has happend.
