  1. 1What are Input devices?Input devices are used to put data into the computer. Keyboards, mice and webcams are examples of input devices.
  2. 2What are Output devices?Output devices allow data to be sent beyond the computer, usually to a human user. Monitors, speakers and printers are examples of output devices.
  3. 3What is the CPU?The CPU is the component that performs calculations and fetches and executes program instructions.
  4. 4What are Storage devices?Storage devices are used to contain programs and data. USB flash drives, DVD drives and internal hard disk drives are examples of storage devices.
  5. 5What is an embedded system? An embedded system is a computer integrated into another device, such as a mobile phone, washing machine, petrol pump or television.
  6. 6What is the importance of Safety in a computer?Computers are at least partially responsible for critical operations such as monitoring and controlling nuclear reactions within nuclear power stations.
  7. 7What are Open Standards?Open standards are both publicly available and flexible. Anyone can engage with technology that Open adopts open standards, and there is usually a wealth of information freely available on how to do standards so. For example, anyone can create web resources that adhere to W3C (Worldwide Web Consortium) standards, and they would not have to pay to do so.
  8. 8Proprietary Standards?Open standards are both publicly available and flexible. Anyone can engage with technology that Open adopts open standards, and there is usually a wealth of information freely available on how to do standards so. For example, anyone can create web resources that adhere to W3C (Worldwide Web Consortium) standards, and they would not have to pay to do so.
  9. 9Industry StandardsThese are formally defined sets of standards that specify how hardware or software from different developers interacts. Unlike proprietary standards, industry standards are not specified by a single Industry organisation but are agreed to by a number of organisations (although an industry standard may standards have originally been a proprietary standard). An example of an industry standard is USB (Universal Serial Bus).
  10. 10De Facto StandardsWhile some standards are specifically agreed by a committee or organisation, de facto standards De facto evolve from what happens to work well. They emerge from practice, rather than being formally standards defined. An example of this happening is the QWERTY keyboard layout, which just happens to have become the norm over time.
  11. 11Computer Misuse ActComputer Misuse Act – This makes hacking illegal. Hacking is gaining access to computer material that you are not allowed to have access to, possibly by stealing a password.
  12. 12Data Protection ActIf you (or the company you work for) store the personal data of anyone, you are required to keep it secure and up to date.
  13. 13Copyrights, Designs and Patents ActIt is illegal to make a copy of any publication (including written works, music and computer programs) without the permission of the copyright owner.
  14. 14Health and Safety at Work ActThis law makes employees responsible for the safety of their staff, as well as staff responsible for the safety of other staff. In terms of computers, the following are considerations:  Trailing cables that are a trip hazard  Too much time spent at a computer which can cause eye strain from looking at the screen or repetitive strain injury (RSI) from typing or using the mouse  A poorly positioned chair, which can cause back problems  A monitor not at eye level, which can cause neck problems
  15. 15ALUThe Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) carries out calculations as well as similar numeric functions, such as comparing two numbers to see which is larger.
  16. 16Control UnitThe Control Unit is responsible for retrieving data and instructions from the correct location in memory and executing those instructions. This might involve calling on other pieces of hardware, such as the ALU if the result of a calculation is needed.
  17. 17Fetch Execute CycleFetch Execute Cycle
