- 1Outline some of the problems inherent in our current agricultural practisesSoil degradation
Industrial Meat Farming
Pesticides - 2Soil Degradation/Desertification33% of soils are degraded
Eutrophication
Phosphate loss
A SOLUTION - no-till farming: where soil isn’t disturbed allowing processes e.g. nitrification to be completed - 3PesticidesNeoticitinoids
Although now banned still remains as only 5% went into crops. 1% was absorbed into the atmosphere and 94% was taken into soil and water - 4Industrial Meat FarmingLand-use through grazing and crop growth for animal feed
Antibiotic use
Greenhouse gases
SOLUTION:
Eat less meat! More subsidies need to be made available to smaller farms who use sustainable techniques - 5Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY)By example, the maximum number of fish which could be removed regularly from the population each year that the population could replenish indefinitely
Downfalls:
It treats environment as unvarying
In practise, very difficult to obtain a reliable estimate - 6Sustainable Forest Management (SFM)SFM attempts to exploit forest resources while also trying to take into account variables such as no. of individuals and pop. age structure into account.
Retain seed trees
Plant tree seedlings
Full effects of logging not completely understood - 7Sustainable Management of Large CarnivoresSuggested a “coexistence” model which aims to create sustainable interactions between humans and large carnivores
17,000 bears
10,000 wolves
10,000 lynx .. in Europe - 8Solutions to Sustainable DevelopmentREDD+
