  1. 1Paschal candle- Large candle displayed prominently in a Catholic Church usually on the sanctuary.
  2. 2Lighting Paschal Candle at Easter VigilPaschal candle first lit on the Easter Vigil on Easter Saturday, lots of actions related take place:
Firstly the vigil starts outside the church in ‘darkness’ as a reminder of when the women went to Jesus’ tomb when it was still dark on the morning of the resurrection.
    1. A fire is lit outside the church as a reminder of Christ rising from the dead ‘Light of the World’.
  3. 3Lighting paschal candle at BaptismPerson receives a baptismal candle lit from the Paschal candle and a prayer is said.
  4. 4Paschal candle lit at FuneralA reminder that the deceased person will soon be re-united with Christ.
  5. 5The Last JudgementPainted by Michelangelo, in 16th century, he was told to paint the Sistine chapel.
    - it is a representation of when Christ returns to judge the living and the dead.
  6. 6The Last Judgement symbols1: Christ-the focal point standing in the centre. He is identifiable by the wounds of his crucifixion. Mary- by Jesus’ right hand side seated. These were the only figures not naked. The ‘nakedness’ showed all people stand equal before God in judgement. Only Mary is specially chosen by God and preserved from sin and judgement.
2: The sides- parable of sheep and goats. The sheep= ‘righteous’. Goats= ‘damned’ on Jesus’ left. The ‘faithful’ help each other rise up towards heaven. On the left the ‘damned’ fall or are dragged down towards hell. At the bottom right there is a figure in a boat commanding people, taking them to hell.
  7. 7EschatologyStudy of what will happen at the end of the world.
Jesus made some eschatological statements : “sun will be darkened and the stars will be falling from heaven”. These large dramatic events are called cosmic disasters which will herald the day of judgement, “A new heaven and a new earth” will be put in place.
-some think these warnings were about the destruction of the temple which already came true.
  8. 8Second Coming of ChristWhen Jesus heralds the end-of-time and established the Kingdom of God in full.
As the 1st followers died, Christians began to focus on preparing for their own judgement.
Think that you should bring about God’s kingdom by loving God and their neighbour.
  9. 9End of time conceptsCosmic Reconciliation: Everything will be restored to how God wants, complete harmony. The current disharmony will be replaced with a perfect harmony.
    1. God creates a perfect universe.
    2. Human sin broke the Harmony in the universe
    3. God redeemed humanity and began the establishment of His Kingdom, conquered sin and death.
    4. The kog will be fully established at the end of time when harmony will be restored fully.
  10. 10Proof of cosmic reconciliation- In Bible various people have visions of the end of time “a new heaven and a new earth”
    - St Julian of Norwich had visions where God showed her that everything would be restored/reconciled.
  11. 11Christian belief of end of time and what to doThe church believes there will be an end of time~second coming of Christ~all creation will be restored~God will judge all
    - Until then the church calls people to repentance and salvation
-Church doesn’t know when the end of time will be so Christians must strive to be ‘prepared’ for the end of time by living a life of repentance to be ready for the end of their own death.
    - Catholic’s do not believe God pre-destines people to Heaven or Hell, rather God gives people ‘free will’ to accept or reject forgiveness.
    - God doesn’t send people to Hell they condemn themselves by refusing forgiveness.
  12. 12Sanctity of life-All life is sacred because it was created by God
-All human life should be protected and respected from conception to natural death.
    -‘imago dei’
-since all human life was created by God it belongs to him.
-only God can decide when humans die
-all human life has equal value and dignity no matter what
-those who are elderly, I’ll or disabled require special regard
  13. 13Caring for the dying-Should be treated with respect to stop them from feeling like a burden.
-Therefore euthanasia is rejected as people may feel pressured into ending their lives early.
-Church encourages the provision of hospices that help people end life in peace and dignity.
  14. 14Euthanasia-“Easy death”
-voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide are illegal in all but a handful of countries.
Catholic Church believe it goes against:
    -“do not murder”
-“neither abortion or euthanasia is a humane solution”(youcat)
-God is creator so he only has right to take life away
    - lowers the value of human life
    - pain and suffering are an integral part of being human to share in the suffering with Christ “a sharing in Christ’s passion and a union”
  15. 15LJ symbols 23: Angels- in revelation Angels blowing horns herald the end of the world. They carry books with the names of those who will go to Heaven or Hell. Book for Heaven appears smaller than the book for Hell.
4: Saints- St Bartholomew holds a knife and his own skin, but no longer carries the scars of his death supports the view that in the resurrected life he is given a new perfect body.
  16. 16EV 22. Priest traces hands over alpha&omega symbol which are an essential part of the candles design. The first and last letters of Greek alphabet=Eternal God.
    3. Priest inserts 5 incense holders in the shape of a cross to remind Christians of Jesus’ death. Also represent the 5 wounds of Christ when he was crucified(hands feet side).
    4. Priest lights the candle from the fire and is carried into the dark church. During the procession he stops 3 times each time singing “the light of Christ” and the congregation responds “thanks be to God”.
    5. As the candle makes it’s way up the church each person lights their candle from the paschal one, representing the victory of light over darkness, life over death. All can share in the resurrection.
