- 1Who were the main people in the discovery of the structure of the atom and what did they do?J.J. Thomson discovered electrons, Ernest rutherfood proved that atom was not solid and had a dense centre called the nucleus, Niels Bohr used the work on the orbits of electrons to develop the idea of that the nucleus is in the centre and electrons orbit around it.
- 2Rutherfords assistants saw (Geiger and Marsden) fired particles at gold leaf and there experiment did not do what they planned. What happened exactly? Some of the particles were deflected back which shows the nucleus deflecting them back this was unexpected.
- 3Explain the basic structure of the atomAn atom is made of a nucleus which contains positively charged protons and neutral neutrons so the nucleus is positive. The space around the nucleus is occupied by negatively charged electrons.
- 4Why are atoms neutral and what is the mass and radius of an atom?they have the same number of protons as electrons so they cancel out each others charges. Mass is 10 to the power of -23 grams and a radius of 10 to the power of -10 metres.
- 5How much mass does a proton, neutron and electron each have?proton - 1
neutron - 1
electrons - virtually zero (0.0005) - 6What is the difference between an element and a compound? An element is made up of one type of atoms where a compound is a substance that contains at least two elements which are chemically combined.
- 7What is an isotope and how do we get a mass number for an element? Some elements have varieties of that have a different number of neutrons, these are called isotopes. An atoms mass number is the amount of protons it has plus the amount of neutrons. Note The atoms of a particular element always have the same amount of protons.
- 8What is the electronic structure of an atom of Sulfur which contains 16 electrons.2,8,6
You can only have two in the first shell and then 8 for the rest. At least that's what we are taught at gcse even though the model is a lie. - 9How is the modern periodic table arranged? It is arranged in order of protons. The elements in the same group have the number of electrons in their outermost shell
