Karten in diesem Stapel (11)
- 1Functions of an OS (Pt. I)1. An OS provides a platform on which application programs can be executed.
2. Provides and environment where the user can communicate with the compute (HCI).
3. Controls the operation of computer hardware. Manages the physical resources of the computer (eg. Memory). - 2Functions of an OS (Pt. II)4. Translates the language of the computer to the language of the user and vice versa (Translator).
5.Provides the utility programs to carry out housework.
6. Hides the complexity of the hardware from the user. - 3Batch Processing-When there's large amounts of data to be processed
-When the data is similar in nature and requires similar processing
-When the computer has certain hours when it's not being used, and so has available processor time
-When the application does not require human intervention - 4Examples of applications which would be done by batch processing-Processing of payroll information
-Production of utility bills (gas, electricity, telephone, etc) from customer records. - 5Real-time OSA real-time OS can react quickly enough to affect the next input, or a process that needs to be carried out.
input-processing-output - 6Examples of real-time OSAirline booking system
A chemical Plant - 7Transaction ProcessingCollects data and stores data about a transaction (eg. withdrawal from a bank account)
- 8Process ControlReceives information about the control from sensors which allow it to make decisions
The results of the decisions are carried out.
The next set of input from the sensors tells the system about the current state of the process and allows the computer to compare with the last set of inputs to decide whether the actions that it took had any impact. This is known as feedback - 9Diagram of process control
- 10Single UserControls a system which has only one user, and their programs at any one time
- 11MultitaskingA type of OS that allows several applications to be available simultaneously. A number of processes are loaded in the memory at the same time. You can interact with the system while it's running
