- 1The CPUIn a computer, the CPU is the part that processes all the data and makes the computer work. CPU is an abbreviation for 'central processing unit'. The Central Processing Unit is the part of a computer that controls and carries out instructions or operations.
- 2The Fetch, Decode, Execute CycleFetch – gets the next program command from the computer’s memory.
Decode – deciphers what the program is telling the computer to do.
Execute – carries out the requested action.
This cycle is repeated until the program stops. - 3The Control UnitA control unit (CU) directs operations within a computer's processor. It lets the computer's logic unit, memory, as well as both input and output devices know how to respond to instructions received from a program. Examples of devices that utilize control units include CPUs and GPUs.
- 4The ALUAn Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) performs arithmetic operations on binary numbers. It is a fundamental building block of many types of computing circuits, including the Central Processing Unit (CPU) of computers and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).
- 5What are the Registers for?A register is a quickly accessible location available to a digital processor's Central Processing Unit (CPU). Registers usually consist of a small amount of fast storage, although some registers have specific hardware functions.
- 6What is the Clock for?The Clock refers to a microchip that regulates the timing and speed of all computer functions which is measured in clock speed. Clock speed is usually measured in MHz (megahertz, or millions of pulses per second) or GHz (gigahertz, or billions of pulses per second).
- 7Why do we Cache in a computer? The computer builds a library of frequently used information into the cache memory. It accelerates the speed of your system. The Cache enables users to perform tasks faster because data transmits more rapidly from cache memory to CPU.
- 8Program Counter (PC)A program counter (PC) is a CPU register in the computer processor which has the address of the next instruction to be executed from memory. It is a digital counter needed for faster execution of tasks as well as for tracking the current execution point.
- 9Memory Data Register (MDR)The Memory Data Register (MDR) is used to temporarily store data read from or written to memory. All transfers from memory to the CPU go via the Memory Data Register.
- 10Memory Address Register (MAR)The Memory Address Register (MAR) is the CPU register that either stores the memory address from which data will be fetched from the CPU, or the address to which data will be sent and stored.
- 11AccumulatorIn a CPU, the accumulator is the register in which intermediate arithmetic and logic results are stored. Without an accumulator, it would be necessary to write the result of each calculation to main memory, perhaps only to be read right back again for use in the next operation.
- 12Von Neumann ArchitectureThe Von Neumann architecture is a computer architecture from a 1945 description by John Von Neumann. The term "Von Neumann architecture" has evolved to mean any stored-program computer in which an instruction fetch and a data operation cannot occur at the same time because they share a common bus.
- 13RAMRAM (Random Access Memory) is Volatile, meaning that content is lost when power is interrupted or switched off. RAM is the temporary data storage.
- 14ROMROM (Read Only Memory) is
