3. Familiarity
4. Convergence
5. Summarization
6. IGP or EGP?
7. Protocol Classification - 2ScalabilityMost IGP's can scale well in a small to med environment but can they scale in the enterprise?
- 3RIP ScalabilityDoes not scale well due to hop count limitation.
*Routes are considered dead after 15 hops - 4OSPF / EIGRP ScalabilityBoth these protocols scale well within enterprise and are the 2 primary you find in production.
- 5BGP ScalabilityNot typically used within the enterprise due to slow convergence. It is however the protocol of the internet so it is able to scale as much as you need.
- 6Vendor InteroperabilityMake sure you have planned for future implementations, will this plan call for single or multi vendor?
- 7Network FamiliarityCan staff support the protocols, vendors, etc... that you are bringing in.
- 8ConvergenceMake sure the protocol of choice has the failover response you want. EIGRP & OSPF are typically quick but RIP & iBGP may cause a longer downtime than expected...
- 9Distance VectorRouting protocol that maintains a full copy of the routing table to it's neighbor.
- 10Link StateLink-state routing protocols create a full topology of the network.
Sort of like a GPS maintains the full map of all roads. - 11Path VectorNetwork routing protocol which maintains the path information that gets updated dynamically. Updates which have looped through the network and returned to the same node are easily detected and discarded.
