- 1How to draw it outATC says hold NE ON 045 radial
Draw a line out from VOR on 045. If turns isn’t specified it defaults to standard right turns so draw from VOR arcing right 180 degrees. Draw a parallel line for the outbound leg and complete the hold with another right 180. Outbound course is 045. Heading to station fix at top of HI, right thumb for right turns to cover 70-90 perpendicular to inbound heading. Draw line from atop thumb through origin to the other side, dividing into parts 1 (larger slice top left -parallel ), 2 (smaller slice top right -teardrop) or below direct entry. Place outbound course into compass rose to reveal which entry - 2What’s Jason Chappard’s methodNo lines. Just visualize top down imagining VOR IN center of heading indicator, heading on top. When ATC gives radial they want you to hold on, that’s the course of your inbound leg, imagine how the rest of the pattern is depicted . Look at it -which way is easiest/shortest?
- 3Reaching your clearance limit, ATC hasn’t issued further instructions. You should do what?Hold on the course approaching the fix shile at the same time querying then about it because ATC should issue the route to expect beyond the clearance limit at least five minutes ahead of yime.
- 4True or false, ATC routinely issues non-standard left turning holds?False. They are discouraged and typically unecessary since most holds are depicted in the first place.
- 5ATC should issue holding instructions how far in advance? At least five minutes
- 6You have been given holding instructions, when should you slow down?About two minutes ahead.
- 7Name an uncommon hold that is published and depicted but rarely on GPS databasesEn-route holds
- 8If you’re confused or uncertain about which entry in a GA airplane, what method will keep you safe? The window entry method where:
1. Any outbound course between the left window and the wing is parallel
2. If it’s out right window it’s teardrop
3. If it’s behind the wings direct
*a little imprecise but good enough to contain a 200knot up to 6000, a 230 knot one up to 14000 feet and a 260 knot one above that - 9Best technique for flying teardrop15 degrees of the outbound leg at 90 knots GS or 30 degrees at 130 knots GS
- 10Best way to ensure you remain in protected airspaceFly as slow as possible above 90 knots
