- 1What is a Wireless Access Point? (WAP)A Wireless Access Point (WAP) is an item of network hardware that connects
to a network switch and allows wireless (WiFi) devices to connect to
the network. - 2What is a network switch?A network switch is a piece of network hardware that allows multiple
computers and devices to connect together to form a wired network. - 3What is a router?A router is a piece of network hardware that connects networks
together, for example connecting a home LAN to the Internet. - 4What is a fibre optic cable?Fibre-optic cables are made of many thin glass strands (fibres) that can transmit binary data as pulses of light.
- 5What are Radio Waves?Radio waves are the transmission media of wireless networking technologies, including WiFi and Bluetooth.
- 6What does WAP stand for?Wireless Access Point.
- 7Which piece of hardware manages the transfer of data between devices on a LAN?Switch.
- 8Which of these is a type of network cable? Connector Coaxial CovalentCoaxial.
- 9Describe the purpose of a network interface controller. (NIC)A network interface controller (NIC) is a piece of hardware inside a computer that allows it to connect to a network. It has a unique identifier called MAC address.
- 10Fibre optic cables are high-performance and do not suffer much from outside interference. However, Ethernet cables, which have lower performance, are still very popular. Suggest one reason why this is the case.Ethernet cables are much cheaper than fibre optic cables and, over short distances, don’t suffer too badly from outside interference.
- 11Casta Networks are developing the HubBanjo, which is a router, a switch and a WAP all in one. During testing, computers could connect wirelessly and share files, but could not connect to the internet. Explain which parts of HubBanjo are faulty. The router part is faulty as the computers cannot connect to the internet. (The switch and WAP parts must be working as the computer can connect and share files)
- 12Name a factor that can affect the performance of a network.Number of users
Error rate
Type of transmission media used
Bandwidth
Latency
