- 1John 18:28-40Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters so that they would not be defiled but could eat the Passover. So Pilate went outside to them and said,
- 2—What you see above is a fragment (written in Greek) from the Gospel of John, dated to within just a few decades of when the apostle John originally wrote his Gospel. What is interesting about this fragment is that it is one of the oldest fragments of New Testament Scripture that has ever been found, and it contains John 18:31-33 (on the front) and John 18:37-38 (on the back) - which is what you just read. (The official name of this ancient fragment is Rylands Papyrus 52.)

- 3The Most Important Question A Person Could Ever AskWhile standing on trial for his life before Pontius Pilate, Jesus states the reason he came into the world is to "bear witness to the truth" (John 18:37). This means that truth can be known. But how can it be known? Jesus must have anticipated this question because the next thing out of his mouth was, "Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice" (John 18:37). If we want to know what truth is, then we should listen to the voice of Jesus, who is "the truth" (John 14:6).
- 4After Jesus made the claims above, Pontius Pilate asked him a question that still resonates, two thousand years later, with human beings across the world. The question is"What is truth?"
- 5After asking the question, Pilate quickly walked away before Jesus had time to provide an answer. At that moment, Pilate walked away from the greatest authority (Jesus) on the most important question("What is truth?") that can ever be asked. Sadly, many individuals today do the same thing.
- 6—The Pilate stone, pictured above, is a block of carved limestone with an inscription attributed to and mentioning Pontius Pilate. It was discovered at the archaeological site of Caesarea Maritima in 1961. Until the discovery of this stone, no archaeological evidence existed that demonstrated Pilate, a key figure in the New Testament, ever really existed

- 7Rather than ignoring truth like Pilate, we must strive to discover what truth is so that we can live according to what is best for our lives (when we live according to truth, we are doing what is best for us). This brings us to the question"What is truth?"
- 8Although there are numerous definitions and interpretations of what truth is, perhaps the best is:Truth is that which corresponds to reality (the way things really are).
