About The Gospels

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The page follows the four Gospels one at a time and then compares them. Luke has the most material: the mind map on the background to Luke's Gospel covers the sources for Luke, the call of the disciples, the sinful woman, Martha and Mary, the widow of Nain and the Good Samaritan. Flashcard decks on Luke cover the annunciation, the shepherds and salvation.

Mark, Matthew and John each have their own decks, maps, notes and quizzes. The John mind map looks at how John's chronology differs from the synoptics, including one Passover against three.

Where to start

  1. Open the mind map called Gospels for a quick view of Matthew, Mark and Luke, the Q document and the likely audiences.
  2. Work through the flashcard deck on Mark's Gospel, then the two decks on Luke's Gospel.
  3. Move to the John mind map and the notes on the prologue to John's gospel.
  4. Finish with the flashcard deck Synoptic Problem Theories if you need the scholarly debate, including the Two Source Hypothesis and the theories of Streeter and Farrer.

Using maps and quizzes together

Read a mind map first and cover each branch in turn. Then take a quiz on the same topic and note what you missed. The quiz called Matthew or John? A Jesus Feeds the 5000 Quiz is a good example, because it asks you to separate two accounts of the same event. The quiz called Religious Education 1st Year is a gentler check on what the word Gospel means and who wrote the synoptics.

For deeper study, there are quizzes on Matthew, on John and on the synoptic Gospels, including weekly quizzes for the synoptics and Acts.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the Bible strand of Religion and theology. Its resources are mostly secondary and university level, and some mention GCSE Religious Studies and A-level Religious Studies. Teachers can pick up ready-made maps and decks for a lesson.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start on this page?

Start with the mind map called Gospels, which gives a short overview of Matthew, Mark and Luke, the Q document and their audiences. Then move to the flashcard deck on Mark's Gospel and the decks on Luke's Gospel. Once you know the basics, try a quiz on the Gospel you are studying.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover background and sources for Luke, John's chronology, the Sermon on the Mount, the 'I Am' sayings, the seven signs, the Annunciation, the birth of Jesus, and parables such as the Good Samaritan and the Great Banquet. There are over 160 mind maps, so most passages have a map.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. If you want to save quiz scores or make your own quizzes, maps, flashcards and notes, a free account lets you do that.

Which levels and exams do these resources suit?

The mix is mostly secondary and university, with a smaller share of general material. Some resources mention GCSE Religious Studies and A-level Religious Studies. University students will find material on the synoptic problem, redaction criticism and Johannine literature, and professional candidates can use the same sets.

Is there anything on the synoptic problem?

Yes. The flashcard deck Synoptic Problem Theories covers the Two Source Hypothesis, Streeter, Farrer, the Augustinian view and the Jerusalem School. There is also a mind map on the Synoptic Gospels and several quizzes, including one on Exam 1 covering the synoptic Gospels and redaction criticism.

What if I can't find the passage I need?

Browse the notes and maps by Gospel, since many are named by chapter or passage, such as Matthew 1-12 or John chapter 6. If nothing fits, you can build your own mind map or flashcards on the passage and add your own notes.
