-Analogy of the university student:
-convinced his tutors are plotting to kill him.
-Would deny any attempts to falsify his claim.
-Although not true, the belief is still important to him as it affects the way he perceives the university.
-This is a blik- it is a way of looking at the world. It is not based on evidence, so cannot be contradicted by evidence.
-the same can be applied to religious believers. - 3Issues with Hare's bliks-Hare doesn't give a way of ranking bilks
-shuts out other people, only meaningful to believers. - 4Mitchell- Faith-agrees with idea of bliks, but argues that believers will allow evidence to overturn their belief.
-e.g parable of the freedom fighter/stranger. A soldier meets a stranger who tells him he is on his side even though the soldier has seen him act on the side of his enemies.
-Mitchell suggests believers are like the soldier- once a prior commitment has been made. they will face religious struggles but essentially give God the benefit of the doubt in the face of these challenges.
