  1. 1"Data"- Evidence gathered by the researchers for the project
  2. 2"Data managment"The correct, safe and secure management of data while data are being gathered, stored and analysed.
  3. 3"Mixed-methods research project"- When researchers use both quantitative and qualitative data for their research project.
  4. 4Analysing quantitative data:1. Simple and samll data sets
    2. Spss
    3. Coding
    4. CADA - computer-assisted data analysis
  5. 5Simple and small data sets:• Analysed by simply counting the numbers and calculating simple statistics in relation to them.
    • Summaries of counted numbers can be meaningful
    • Might need to use a calculator or spreadsheet for more data
  6. 6SPSS:• If we have many quantitative data
  7. 7Coding:• Coding assigned by the researcher is always assigned using a simple logic.
    • In coding each response as a number – the researcher assigns a numeric label to each value = “value label”
    • “Coding Keys”:
    - A guide to all of the codes used in coding data to input the data into a computer software program.
  8. 8CADA:• Computerized software package - The computer conducts the analysis (following researchers instructions)
    • Substantial aid in the analysis of large data sets.
    • Capacity to store the analysis and it’s results – particularly invaluable to large data sets
    • Stores data safely and securely – assuming the computer is safe and secure.
    • Facilitates the cleaning of data
    - Checking accuracy in data and accuracy in the way in which data were loaded.
    - Data are ‘cleaned’ to ensure they are accurate.
  9. 9"Qualitative data"- non-numerical
    - can come in almost any form
o Stated or articulated – beliefs, feelings, opinions and perspectives.
o Narratives or stories, images, drawings, maps, cartoons, paintings, photographs.
  10. 10Analysing qualitative data:1. Simple approach
    2. Computerized qualitative data analysis software package
  11. 11Simple Approach:1. Read through all the data and, while reading, make a list of all of the themes that occur in the data.
 The themes: would be the key ideas or the key issues in the data that strike the researcher.
    2. The researcher continues reading the transcripts and recording themes until no new themes emerge.
    3. Then takes the complete list of themes and explores them with a view to collapsing themes together.
    4. Sometimes necessary to conceptualize a new theme that will encompass all the themes collapsed together.
    5. The researcher can colour code the themes.
    6. The researcher then decides how to tell the story of the data, based on this thematic analysis, in the written account of the analysis.
  12. 124 Stages of data Analysis:1. Description
    2. Interpretation
    3. Conclusions
    4. Theorisation
  13. 131. Description• Researcher engages in a descriptive analysis of the data
    • Describes the data – describing what it is that they see in the data
  14. 142. Interpretation• Researcher states what it is they think the data mean.
  15. 153. Conclusions• Researcher draws a major or minor conclusion from the data.
  16. 164. Theorisation• Researcher looks back at their literature review and checks to see how their findings fit with the findings of the theorists detailed there.
