Which is fraction is bigger: 3/4 or 5/7?
both fractions have a denominator that divides into 28, so rewrite the fractions with a denominator of 28 -
3/4 = 21/28 and 5/7 = 20/28
so 3/4 is bigger. - 7Adding and subtracting fractionsChange the fractions so they have the same denominator then add/subtract the top numbers (numerators).
- 8Adding and subtracting mixed numbersTo add or subtract mixed numbers change them to improper fractions first and then change the answer back into a mixed number (if needed).
- 9Multiplying fractionsMultiply the numerators to find the new numerator, multiply the denominators to find the new denominator, then simplify where necessary.
- 10Dividing fractionsTurn the second fraction upside down, then multiply.
- 11Dividing mixed numbersRewrite the mixed numbers as improper fractions.
Then turn the second fraction upside down, then multiply. - 12Equivalent fractionsWhen writing equivalent fractions, do the same mulitplication or division to the top and bottom numbers.
For example, if you multiply the top by 2, you must also multiply the bottom by 2. - 13Calculating fractions of a quantityFind 3/5 of 20
1. find 1/5 of 20 = 20/5 = 4
2. so 3/5 of 20 = 3 x 1/5 of 20 = 3 x 4 = 12
so 3/5 of 20 = 12
