About Fractions

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The resources here follow fractions from first ideas to conversions. Early quizzes such as Identifying Halves and Identifying Fractions ask what a fraction is and what a half looks like. Later ones move on to adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, with lettered sets (A, B and C) for each operation. Some of the material mentions GCSE Maths.

Where to start

If fractions are new, begin with Identifying Halves or Fractions Quiz - Level 1, which uses everyday problems like sharing chocolates and selling pups. Then open the Fractions mind map, which explains how to add fractions by first making the denominators the same, for example turning 1/2 and 1/3 into 3/6 and 2/6.

Building skills in order

  1. Learn the words with the Fraction Vocabulary flashcards.
  2. Practise Equivalent fractions flashcards, which ask whether pairs such as 18/63 and 6/27 match.
  3. Use Reducing Fractions to revisit factors and the greatest common factor.
  4. Try Improper fractions and Mixed numbers, where you fill in missing digits.
  5. Move to the A, B and C quizzes on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

Using quizzes and maps together

Take a quiz first and note which questions went wrong. Then open the matching mind map, such as Recurring decimals to fractions, which walks through writing x = 0.4545... and multiplying by a power of 10. Go back to the quiz afterwards and see what has changed. The Pre-Test on Multiplying Fractions works well as a check before you start a topic, and the bonus quizzes give extra practice afterwards.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the Number strand of Mathematics. Its neighbours are decimals and percentages, and resources such as Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Flashcards link the three together.

Choose one quiz that matches where you are now, and make your own flashcards for the rules you keep forgetting.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with Identifying Halves or Fractions Quiz - Level 1 if fractions are new. Both use simple, everyday questions. If you already know the basics, try the Pre-Test on Multiplying Fractions or one of the A quizzes on adding and subtracting to see where you stand.

What do the mind maps cover?

The mind maps cover adding fractions with different denominators, mixed numbers, comparing and ordering fractions, equivalent fractions, and converting fractions to decimals and percentages. One walks through turning a recurring decimal into a fraction step by step. There are more than 110 on the page.

Are these resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself, so styles and difficulty vary from one resource to the next.

Which levels and exams do they suit?

The resources suit school students and primary pupils, plus teachers looking for classroom material. Many are primary-level, while others go further. GCSE Maths is the one exam mentioned in the listed resources, so older students can use them for revision.

Can I practise a single operation?

Yes. There are separate quizzes for adding and subtracting, multiplying, dividing and converting fractions, in A, B and C sets. There are also pre-tests for multiplying, dividing, converting and equivalent fractions if you want a quick check first.

What if I can't find what I need?

Try a nearby topic, such as decimals, percentages or mixed numbers, since many resources cover several ideas together. You can also make your own quiz, mind map or flashcards with a free account, which also saves your quiz scores.
