Multi store Memory revision

- 1What is the MSM?An explanation of memory based on 3 separate memory stores, also shows how information is transferred between these stores
- 2What is the sensory register?Stores information about the senses here, collected by your eyes, ears, nose etc. Information is only retained here for a very short duration. The capacity of these registers is very large, such as all the cells on the retina of the eye. The method of coding depends on the sense organ involved (eg visual for eyes). They're constantly receiving information but most of this receives no attention and hence disappears
- 3Who first proposed the MSM?Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin in 1968
- 4What is attention? If a person's attention is focused on one of the sensory stores, then the data is transferred to STM. Attention is the first step to remembering something.
- 5What is maintenance rehearsal?Repetition keeps information in the STM but eventually such repetition will create a LTM. Atkinson and Shiffrin proposed a direct relationship between rehearsal in STM and the strength of the long term memory. The more the information is rehearsed he better.
- 6What is LTM in relation to the MSM?LTM is potentially unlimited in capacity and duration. You may feel there are things you have forgotten but evidence suggests you either didn't make the memory permanent or it is not accessible.
- 7What is retrieval? The process of getting information from LTM involves the infomation passing back through STM. Only then is it available for use.
