CHAPTER 15 LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Emma Neilson Englisch

Inhalt des Flussdiagramms

  1. IDENTIFY THE PRINCIPLE PORTALS OF ENTRY

  2. Mucous membranes

  3. respiratory tract, gastrointestional tract, genitourinary tract

  4. Skin

  5. parenteral route

  6. direct deposition beneath the skin or membranes

  7. largest organ on body

  8. DIFFERENTIATE PORTAL OF ENTRY AND PORTAL OF EXIT

  9. Portal of entry: how microbes enter the body

  10. Portal of exit: Microbes leave in secretions, excretions, discharges, or shed tissue

  11. commonly through respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts

  12. DEFINE ID50 AND LD50

  13. ID50: infectious dose for 50% of sample population

  14. LD50: Lethal dose for 50% of the population

  15. USING EXAMPLES, EXPLAIN HOW MICROBES ADHERE TO HOST CELLS

  16. The majority of adhesions are glycoproteins or lipoproteins

  17. ex: pili, fimbriae, flagella

  18. Also can adhere using biofilms: biofilms are masses of microbes and extracellular products. They cause 65% of human bacterial infections

  19. EXPLAIN HOW CAPSULES AND CELL WALL COMPONENTS CONTRIBUTE TO PATHOGENICITY

  20. Capsules

  21. Cell wall components

  22. Formed by glycocalyx material, resists hosts defenses and prevents phagocytosis

  23. chemical substances contribute to virulence

  24. M protein is heat and acid resistant/mediates attatchment; waxy lipid resists phagocytosis

  25. COMPARE THE EFFECTS OF COAGULASES, KINASES, HYALURONIDASE AND COLLAGENASE

  26. Coagulases: Bacterial enzymes that clot the fibrinogen in blood (fibrinogen is converted to fibrin)

  27. Kinases: enzymes that break down fibrin and digest clots

  28. Hyaluronidase: Hydrolyzes hyaluronic acid (polysaccharide that holds together cells in connective tissue; destroyed by lgA proteases)

  29. Collagenase: Facillitates the spread of gas gangrene (breaks down collagen, which forms the connective tissues of muscles and other organs)

  30. DEFINE AND GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF ANTIGENIC VARIATION

  31. Definition: Ability of pathogens to alter their surface antigens

  32. ex: gonorrhea, African sleeping sickness

  33. By the time the body mounts an immune response, the pathogen has already altered its antigens

  34. DESCRIBE HOW BACTERIA USE THE HOST CELL'S CYTOSKELETON TO ENTER THE CELL

  35. Microbes produce surface proteins called invasins that rearrange nearby actin filaments (can cause ruffling)

  36. DESCRIBE HOW SALMONELLA COMPETES WITH NATIVE BACTERIA IN THE INTESTINE

  37. Salmonella uses type 3 secretion system (T3SS) to inject proteins that hijack the host

  38. T3SS is used again to pump out proteins into cell from vacuole for survival and replication

  39. DESCRIBE THE FUNCTION OF SIDEROPHORES

  40. They gather iron for bacteria by taking away the iron from iron transport proteins of the cell

  41. IDENTIFY SIX MECHANISMS OF AVOIDING DESTRUCTION BY PHAGOCYTOSIS
