Mao attempted to stall and sabotage Soviet involvement in Vietnam to ensure North Vietnam's dependence on China

Mao began to regard the USSR as a revisionist and imperialist sate which had reconciled with the USSR and was therefore a threat to China and his regime

Mao launched the Cultural Revolution in 1966 as a way of consolidating his power, political rivals were eliminated, publications and works were censored or banned and Mao's Red Guards led entirely by the Chinese youth helped to bring about the revolution

USSR stationed troops in Mongolia and eastern Kazakhstan in February 1967 to reinforce its borders
