The Big 5 and the Internet

Hamburger and Ben-Artzi (2000)-

higher neurotic = less frequency informational use; higher extroversion = higher use of chat, discussion groups, other social uses

Amiel & Sargent (2004) - expanded on Hamburger, looked at ‘why’s

High neuroticism = using internet to feel a sense of ‘belonging’ and to be informed (opposite to Hamburger)

Extraverts rejected communal / social aspects of internet like listening to others, instead voicing their own opinions

Psychoticism demonstrated an interest in more deviant internet; file sharing pirated material etc.
