Traditional: Has many useful virtues

The grammar of the language is described in terms of syntagmatic structures

Structural description had little to do with English

The structural view of language as a collection of syntagmatic patterns

Chomsky argued that the structural description was very superficial

Two levels of meaning

A deep level

Surface level

It is concerned with the organization of thoughts

Thoughts are expressed through the sintax of the language

Language varies according to the context

Language variation helps to distinguish an area of education

The language variation implies the existance of varieties of language

Functions: are concerned with social behavior. Represent the intention of the speaker

Notions: reflect the way in which the human mind thinks

Emphasis moved to looking at how meaning is generated between sentences

The context of the sentence is also important in creating the meaning
