1. Strengths

   • Supporting evidence
     • Controlled lab studies on capacity duration and coding support STM and LTM
       • Brain scans show the difference between STM and LTM
         • Beardsley 1997 prefrontal cortex = active when STM engaged
         • Squire hippocampus active when LTM
   • Case studies
     • Study of HM by Scoville and Milner 1957
       • Brain damage caused by the removal of his hippocampus on both sides of his brain to reduce epilepsy
         • His personality and intellect remained the same
         • He could no longer form new LTMs but could remember things before the surgery

2. Limitations

   • MSM is oversimplified
     • MSM treats STM and LTM as unitary stores but is not supported by reaserch
       • reserch sugggests there are differnet kinds of memory such as episodic, semantic and procedural
         • newer models such as the WMM suggest that there are different qualitative memory stores
   • LTM involves more than maintenance rehearsal
     • Craik and Lockhart 1972
       • how well you remember somthing is due to the way ypu process that information rather than how much you repeat it
         • Deep processing involves a more complicated method of learning than repetition
