   • input data = message hash value = message digest

   • Easy to compute
   • infeasible generate message
   • Modify message without changing the hash
   • to find 2 diff. message without changing hash

3. must withstand all known type of crytanalytic attack

   • Pre-image resistance
   • Second pre-image resistance
   • Collision resistance
