1. Key Vocabulary

   • Data Validation - checks to ensure that the data is sensible and reasonable, but does no check the accuracy
   • data sanitisation - trims or strips strings, removing unwanted characters so that only permitted characters are included. e.g. da%ve the % would be removed
   • authentication - having different levels of user and preventing everyday users from being able to significantly change a system.
   • maintainability - updating a code so that it is compatible with current requirements.
   • comments - to help you describe the code and program by using a #
   • indentation - making code more readable by laying it out in manner that keeps sections of code seperate

2. Error Types

   • Syntax Error - an error in the code e.g. missing punctuation etc.
   • Logical Error - an error which allows the code to run but produces incorrect outcomes.
   • EOF Error - the End Of File has been reached whilst the computer is waiting for a snippet to be completed.
   • Type Error - Attempting to use data incorrectly, e.g. adding 1 to a string etc.
   • name error - using a variable before its declaration
   • indentation error - loops or functions are incorrectly indented

3. testing data - when testing your program it is important to data to test and create a test plan

   • valid data - obvious data which should definitely pass
   • data range - the data will be used to check the code works correctly.
   • valid extreme - data that is on the very edge of what could pass, the highest or lowest amounts that could pass
   • invalid data - data, of the correct type that should definitely fail.
   • Erroneous data - data that is of the wrong type and should fail.
   • expected outcome - the data the code should output if it is running correctly

4. anticipating misuse - building programs which do not allow a user to deliberately break the system.

   • Contingency planning - Having built in checks and outcomes based on what happens when things go wrong
