13- House-Warming

1. Winter

   • The only work Thoreau does is collect firewood nowadays
   • Studies the frozen pond and bubbles that form beneath the ice
   • Forces Thoreau to shift ideals to survive and be comfortable
     • Built a chimney to keep his cabin warm, even though he prefers being heated by the sunlight over "artificial fire"
       • Sees a face in the fire
     • Uses a cooking-stove, concealing the chimney fire, making him feel as if he’s lost a companion
   • Puts up panels around his house for insulation to keep in the warmth

2. Thoreau's Beliefs

   • “It is so much pleasanter and wholesomer to be warmed by the sun while you can be, than by an artificial fire” (Thoreau 191)

3. Transcendentalism
