Chapter 25 - Software Quality

1. Explain what is meant by Alpha testing

   • Carried out by the developer. Testing modules against module specifications Intregration testing using the system module architecture. System testing against system specifications. Test schdule/data used. White box/Black box testing may be used

2. Explain what is meant by Acceptence testing

   • Done by eventual end users to give them confidence. A group representing the end users tests the application using real world scenarios/data. Use the software using real data in realistic conditions and provide feedback to the developers. It is the final stage before the software goes live. Eventually, the users sign off the software/complete the contract

3. Explain how software maintence can improve the quality of the new system

   • Errors will be detected and corrected during corrective maintenance, errors not detected during system testing. The preformance of the system will be improved during prefective maintenance. Additionial fintionality will will be added during adaptive maintenance

4. Explain what is Beta Testing

   • Done after Alpha Preformed by representitve end users using real data and real volumes of data. This pre-release testing. Given to a large group of select users

5. Types of maintenance

   • Perfective- The system is running perfectly and is only improved to reduce access waiting time and increase accuracy
   • Adaptive - Additional functionallity is added like new user requirements or new legal legislation

6. different types of test data

   • Normal data which lies within the permissible range
   • Extreme data which lies on the boundary
   • null data which should not normally occur

7. three methods of obtaining software

   • software could be purchased ready made “off the shelf" from a computer store or specialist software shop - relatively cheap as the cost will be shared among many users
   • developed “in-house” by specialists within the business - The full cost of the software will fall on the business
   • out-sourced” … to specialist software developers - inefficient method as it would be expensive and take a long time
