1.1 System Architecture
Processor
- Processes information
MHz
GHz
- 1GHZ Executes 1billion instructions per second
- 2GHZ executes 2 billion instructions per second
Hertz HZ
- Measurement of electricity
Excute
- Complete an instruction
Instruction
- Telling something to do something
Embedded System
- Computer system that is made up of software and hardware
- e.g Dishwasher
- Computer system that is made up of software and hardware
Clock Speed
Cache
- Cache Acts as an intermediary between the processor and Main memory
- Intermediary - Acts as a link
- Having bigger cache will reduce the number of memory disk transfers
- Cache Acts as an intermediary between the processor and Main memory
Core
RAM (Random Access Memory)
- Holds data and instructions that are currently in use by the processor
- Volatile
- Gets emptied when power is turned off
ROM - Read Only Memory
- Instructions are pernamentaly etched on a ROM chip
- E.G Gives the Instructions to start up the operating system
- Non-volatile
- Instructions are pernamentaly etched on a ROM chip
EEPROM - Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory
- E.G Sim Cards / Flash memory
- Data / Instructions can be electronically erased and replaced
- E.G Sim Cards / Flash memory
Fetch - Decode - Execute cycle
- Instruction that has been addressed is transferred back to the processor along the data bus.
- This is held in the Memory Data Register.
- The instruction would then be transferred to the Current Instruction Register.
- This is held in the Memory Data Register.
- The instruction is decoded to help the current instruction register
- The instruction is split into an Op-code and an operand
- The instruction is carried out by the Arithmetic Logic Unit
- The instruction is split into an Op-code and an operand
- Instruction that has been addressed is transferred back to the processor along the data bus.
