Input/output Device Functions

1. Touch Screen

   • Input and Output
     • Used widely on mobile phones, tablet PCs and interactive whiteboards. Used as an input device by tapping the screen or using gesture control. Used as an output device by viewing the display.

2. Keyboard

   • Input
     • Commonly used data entry method- the user presses a key and a code is entered into the computer. Speciality keyboards are used in restaurants where each menu item is pressed to take an order

3. Pointing devices mouse

   • Input
     • A mouse is the most popular pointing and selection device used in computing; touch pads and trackballs are also types of pointing devices that are used on laptop/netbook computers

4. Microphone

   • Input
     • Microphones used to input sound into a computer system, often used in videoconferencing and voice recognition software.

5. Barcode scanner

   • Input
     • Barcode readers are used to input data automatically from barcodes. The barcode reader scans the barcode using a visible red light, which is then used to identify the details of a product

6. Joystick/games controller

   • Input
     • Joystick is used to play computer games by controlling the way that something moves on the screen; it can also be used to control devices such as a wheelchair

7. Webcam

   • Input
     • Digital image captured and input into system for use in on-screen display or videoconferencing

8. Sensors

   • Input
     • Sensors are used to detect physical variables for input into a computer control system, such as temperature, pressure and light

9. Flat-screen monitor

   • Output
     • Flat screen monitors are used to display the output from a computer system. They take up less space and emit less heat than the CRT screens they have replaced.

10. Speakers

    • Output
      • Use internal sound card to create high quality audio to be output through externally connected speakers

11. Inkjet Printer

    • Output
      • Colour inkjet printers are smaller than laser printers and produce a higher quality output. Normally used in the home environment, so speed and noise of operation isn't such a problem.

12. LED lights

    • Output
      • LED Lights are often used as output indicators from a control system

13. Actuator

    • Output
      • Actuators are widely used as outputs from a control system; for example, it contains a motor and linkage to lift a car park barrier
