THE CONDICTIONALS
Using the conditional means that one action depends on another. Conditionals are used to talk about real or unreal situations. In general, conditional sentences carry the word "if".
There is no verb tense for the conditional in English as there is in Spanish. At the same time, the auxiliary verb "would" is used to form the conditional in English.
Conditional Types
- Type "0" : Zero Conditional
- This type of conditional is used when the condition and the result are always true, such as scientific facts.
- example: If you "heat" water to 100° C, it "boils". / Water "boils" if you "heat" it to 100° C.(Si calientas agua a 100 ° C hierve.)
- if = if condition =present simple result=present simple
- Type "1" : First Conditional
- This type of conditional is used for the future and in cases where it is highly probable that the condition will pass.
- example: If Bill "studies", he "will pass" the exam. / Bill "will pass" the exam if he "studies".(Si Bill estudia, aprobará el examen.)
- if= if condition= present simple result= future simple (“will”)
- Note: Some modal verbs can be used instead of "will" to change the probability or express an opinion.
- example: If it doesn’t rain, we may go to the beach.(Significado: Con el uso de “may”, el significado de esta frase cambia. Ahora, el hablante reconoce que puede ir a la playa, pero no está tan seguro de si irá.)
- example: If Bill "studies", he "will pass" the exam. / Bill "will pass" the exam if he "studies".(Si Bill estudia, aprobará el examen.)
- This type of conditional is used for the future and in cases where it is highly probable that the condition will pass.
- type "2": Second Conditional
- Type 2 is used to express an unrealistic possibility in the present, such as a wish or a dream, or for an action in the future that is not so probable.
- example: If I "won" the lottery, I "would travel" around the world. / I "would travel" around the world if I "won" the lottery.(Si ganara la lotería, viajaría alrededor del mundo.)
- if= if condition= past simple result= “would” + infinitivo
- tipe "3": Third Conditional
- Unlike types 1 and 2, the third type of conditional is used when we talk about a condition in the past that has not happened.
- example: If I "had known" then what I know now, I "would have done" things differently. / I "would have done" things differently if I "had known" then what I know now.(Si hubiera sabido en el pasado lo que sé ahora, habría hecho las cosas de manera diferente.)
- if= if condition=past perfect result= “would have” + past participle
- example: If I "had known" then what I know now, I "would have done" things differently. / I "would have done" things differently if I "had known" then what I know now.(Si hubiera sabido en el pasado lo que sé ahora, habría hecho las cosas de manera diferente.)
- Unlike types 1 and 2, the third type of conditional is used when we talk about a condition in the past that has not happened.
- Type "0" : Zero Conditional
