1. Institutional Aggression

   • IA can be defined as aggressive behaviour that occurs within and insititution
     • Motivated by social forces rather than anger or frustration.
   • Insitution refers to organisation or a place of confinment with its own social norms where behaviour is restricted and under the control of specific staff (Schools - Uniforms - Loss of Freedom

2. Deindividuasation

   • deindivduated means loss ones sense of individuality and identity
   • Individuals feel less identifyable (large group or in uniform) engage less in inhibited behaviour
   • Shared responsiblity reduces the sense of guilt in action resulting in violent behaviours and harm to others or property.
   • Alcohol and Drugs - create altered state of conciousness that contribute to a lack of inhibition
   • Uniforms where individuals identifuy the roles created by the unirofrm and loe sense of individuality
   • Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiement
     • 24 healthy males university student ppts.
     • radomally assigned a prisoner or a guard.
     • deindividuated by allocated and outfit to match the role.

     • found that guards behaved in abusive ways by physically and verbally abusing the prisoners.

     • McCorkle survey found very little evidence for a direct relationsjip between violence and deprived living.
     • the ppts are young males therefore are not representative of the wider popuklation so the findings cannot be applied to the behaviours of individuals - may be testostorone rather than social.
       • This is gender bias as only males were in the study therefore can only reflect how men behave in these situations so cannot be generalised the findings to females which may behave differently . Men have been found to have higher levels of testostorone than femals which may influence levels of aggression, as a consequence it labels males and females as aggressive.
