Predications, Arguments and Predicates
Predication is the relationship between a subject
- with its modifiers and a verb with its complements
predicates can be divided into: Arguments and Predicates
- Ex. My uncle owns this car.
- argument predicate argument
- Ex. My uncle owns this car.
three semantics opossiotions are needed
- --> Direction= Directional contrast between "in front of"
- + Horizontal= +lateral side to side
- - Horizontal= vertical -lateral back to back
- Argumet 1= +human
- +adult
- +male
- +singular
- +male
- +adult
- Argumet 1= +human

Arguments
- Is an expression that helps complete the emaning of a predicate
- Arguments sometimes match syntactic elements like subject, berb and object and sometime do not
- Ex: "My uncle" and "this cars" in sentence My uncle owns this car.
- "A tall woman" and " the car" in sentence " A tall woman in front of the car"
- A tall woman Tall +Human +Adult -Male +Singular
- Arguments sometimes match syntactic elements like subject, berb and object and sometime do not
- Is an expression that helps complete the emaning of a predicate
Predicates
- Predicate is to modify the subject
- Logical predicates are expressed in natural language
- By words of various parts of speech including verbs, including verbs, adjectives and common nouns
- Ex: "owns" in sentence "My uncle owns this car"
- "in front of" in sentence "A tall woman in front of the car "
- Ex: "owns" in sentence "My uncle owns this car"
- By words of various parts of speech including verbs, including verbs, adjectives and common nouns
- Logical predicates are expressed in natural language
- Predicate is to modify the subject
Null Arguments
- Is void of content in the sense that it has the maximum generality of references.
- It has no syntactic realization, but is detected negatively
- Ex. Jhon is eating = Jhon is eating something or other.
- It has no syntactic realization, but is detected negatively
- Is void of content in the sense that it has the maximum generality of references.
Subordinate Predications
- In semantics a subordinate Predication may be part of a main predication
Downgraded or Featurized Predications
- One predication may be included in another and that is to reduce its statut in the semnatic herarchy
- Ex: A man who was wearing a wig entered the room. A man entered he room.
- One predication may be included in another and that is to reduce its statut in the semnatic herarchy
