Diffusional welding

1. Advantages

   • reduction of surface oxides
   • improves the cleanliness and integrity of the brazed joint
   • allows the use of high vapor pressure brazing alloys
   • Materials that cannot be brazed within a vacuum atmosphere.
   • Some specific aplications
     • Medical devices
     • Electronics devices
     • Aerospace parts
       • precision machined stainless steel components
     • High Vapor Pressure Brazing Alloys (Cu, Ag, etc.)
     • High cleaning sets

2. Is based on

   • Cleaning (reducing) properties of high purity hydrogen
     • Improve the flow characteristics of the brazing alloy
     • The hydrogen atmosphere reduces surface oxides on the base material
       • allow the brazing alloy to flow (wet) more efficiently
         • Creating a high integrity brazed joint.

3. How to do it?

   • inside a sealed retort furnace or a convex-angle conveyorized furnace
     • Introduce the material
       • Surround it within a high purity hydrogen atmosphere
         • typically with a dew point below 60ºF
         • Increasing temperature
           • Reduction of the surface oxides
             • Improve the wetting characteristics of the brazing alloy

   • Surface coating of surfaces to avoid
