   • Each piece of hardware on every different configuration of PC is different
     • writing software to talk to all of these would be impossible
       • even if we did, what would happen when a new hardware is released.

     • Used by most PC's and phone operating systems
     • Graphical representations of the computer’s functions are shown to the user
     • Graphical user interface
   • CLI
     • Command line interface
     • a text based interface
     • The user types commands, and the result is shown as text
     • harder to use but are less likely to crash or break
