Osgood/Schramm model

  1. What is it?

    • the osgood-schramm model is based on the theory that communication is a two-way street, with a sender and a receiver.
  2. Features

    • Osgood popularized that the notion of communication was circular rather than linear, requiring two participants who would take turns sending and receiving information
    • The sender can deliver a message and then become the receiver.
    • Both the sender and the receiver fulfill 3 roles: encode, interpret and decode
  3. Examples

    • Best friends, have become involved in a popularized two-watt communication system
    • A Professor of calculus would have very little luck communicating important math principles to a classroom of kindergarten students, because they do not share a field of experience that makes the message easy to understand
    • Laura invited sofia and camila for dinner. Laura was discussing with her husband previously and she is on a bad mood. Laura is not so confident with Camila to tell her the reason of her mood, so she only told Sofia about the disccusion. Laura feels tired so the told that to the girls. Sofia understands but Camila thinks she has done something wrong because she doesn’t know the background of the situation. Camila is experiening a semantic barrier due to the lack of context to understand
  4. Components

    • Sender
      • This is the person who encodes
    • Semantic Barriers
      • Background, beliefs, experiences that influence how the sender transmits and the receiver interprets it
    • Receiver
      • Person who decodes (interprets) the message
  5. Advantages

    • Facilitates the study of interpersonal relationships
    • Which acts as confirmation that the message was received and decoded
    • A simple approach, in a circular pattern and this allows both parties, the receiver, and the sender, to contribute equally
  6. Disadvantages

    • The message may be misunderstood or understood differently due to semantic noise
    • The composition of this model is based in a 1 to 1 communication model, instead of multiple participants. Due to this, this model may not be as efficient as other ones
    • It is not the most useful model in collective communication
