  2. They describe the result of something that might happen (in the present or future) or might have happened but didn't (in the past)

    • A conditional sentence is based on the word ‘if’. There are always two parts to a conditional sentence
      • One part beginning with ‘if’ to describe a possible situation.
      • And the second part which describes the consequence.
      • S. (s. f.). Conditionals. Perfect English Grammar. https://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/conditionals.html
        • Gordon, E., James, P., & Stolls, L. (2017). English Download for B1.2 Student’s Book with Workbook. Hamilton House Publishers Ltd.
  3. Conditional sentences are often divided into different types.

    • Zero Conditional
      • We use the zero conditional to talk about things that are always or generally true.
        • Also, we use the present simple in both the if clause and the main clause.
          • if/when + present simple, ... present simple
            • Structure
              • Examples
                • If you mix yellow and blue, you get green.
                • When I take a bus, I always get dizzy.
    • First Conditional
      • We use first conditional to talk about things that are always or generally true.
        • Also, we use the present simple in the if clause and future simple in the main clause.
          • Structure
            • if + present simple, ... will + infinitive
            • Examples
              • If I work hard, I will get a new cellphone.
              • Unless you hurry up, we'll miss our bus.
    • Second Conditional
      • We use the second conditional to talk about something that is impossible or unlikely to happen in the present or the future.
        • Also, we use it to give advice, usually with If I were you.
          • Structure
            • if + past simple, ... would + infinitive
            • Examples
              • If I met Lionel Messi, I would get his autograph!
              • If I were you, I would go to Italy.
    • Third Conditional
      • We use the third conditional to talk about things in the past that were possible but did not happen.
        • We use the past perfect in the if clause and would + have + past participle in the main clause.
          • Structure
            • if + past perfect, ... would + have + past participle
            • Examples
              • If I had known you were sleeping.
              • If I had known the park was so far from my house, I wouldn't have tried to walk there.
