1. What is an operating system (OS)

   • An OS is system software that manages computers, hardware and software resources and provides common services for computers programs. The OS is a component of the system software in a computer system. Aplication programs usually require an OS to function.
     • Examples of OS: Android, Blackberry, BSD, Chrome, IOS, Linux, OS X, QNX, Steamg, and Windows.
   • Types of operating systems (OS)
     • Single- and multi. tasking
       • A single-tasking system can only run one program at a time, while a multi-tasking OS allows more than a program.
     • Single- and multi- user
       • Single-user OS have no facilities to distinguish users, but may allow multiple programs to run in tamdem. A multi-user OS extends the basic concept of multi-tasking with facilities that identify processes and resources, such a disk space be longning to multiple users, and the system permits multiple users to interact with the system at the same time.
     • Distributed
       • A distributed OS manages a group of distinc computers and makes them appearto be a single computer.
     • Templated
       • In a OS , distributed and cloud computing context, templating refers to creating a single virtual machine image as guest as OS, then saving it as a tool for multiple running virtual machines.
     • Real-time
       • A real-time OS is an OS that guarantees to time. A real-time OS maybe a single- or multi-tasking, but when multitasking, it uses specialized schedelung algorithms so that a deterministic nature of behaviour is archieved.
     • Library
       • A library OS is one in which the services that a typical OS provides, such as networking, are provided in the form of libraries
   • Functions
     • It manages the hardware and software resources of the system.
