1. Wave - transports energy from one place to another without transporting matter

   • Repeating form, much like simple harmonic motion
   • disturbs the medium
     • When the medium is a material substance, the wave is a mechanical wave
     • Transverse waves - the motion of the medium is perpendicular to the direction of the propagation of the wave
     • longitudinal waves - the motion of the medium is parallel to the direction of the propagation of the wave

   • Crest - the maximum positive y displacement
   • trough - the maximum negative y displacement
   • nonperiodic - the wave disturbance is limited to a small region of space
   • periodic
     • the wave extends over a very wide region of space
     • the displacement of the medium varies in a repeating and often sinusoidal pattern
     • involves repeating motion as a function of both space and time
     • have a frequency
     • have an amplitude
