PROPERTIES OF MATTER

1. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

   • Those that can be observed or measured without changing the substance's composition.  These properties help describe the state or appearance of a substance. If measured they may require or imply a physical change
   • Extensive or general properties
     • Those that ARE COMMON to every substance ( general )  and DEPEND on the amount of sample. 
     • Mass and volume
   • Intensive or specific properties
     • These DO NOT depend on the amount or size of the sample.  These  properties remain constant regardless of the quantity of the substance. These have a SPECIFIC value depending on the substance and can be used to identify substances
     • Density, Melting point, solubility, conductivity

2. CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

   • These  describe how a substance interacts with other substances or undergoes chemical changes. These properties involve the composition of the substance. If measured or tested they will require a chemical change. 
   • Flamability, reactivity, corrosiveness, Toxicity, pH
