PROPERTIES OF MATTER
- Characteristics that all matter has and describe it as for example color, texture, chemical behavior etc.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
- Those that can be observed or measured without changing the substance's composition. These properties help describe the state or appearance of a substance. If measured they may require or imply a physical change
- Extensive or general properties
- Those that ARE COMMON to every substance ( general ) and DEPEND on the amount of sample.
- Mass and volume
- Intensive or specific properties
- These DO NOT depend on the amount or size of the sample. These properties remain constant regardless of the quantity of the substance. These have a SPECIFIC value depending on the substance and can be used to identify substances
- Density, Melting point, solubility, conductivity
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
- These describe how a substance interacts with other substances or undergoes chemical changes. These properties involve the composition of the substance. If measured or tested they will require a chemical change.
- Flamability, reactivity, corrosiveness, Toxicity, pH
