Assignment Term 4

  1. algorithm constructs

    • sequence
      • A sequence is a number of instructions that are processed one after the other.
    • assignment
      • Assignment is used to store the value of an expression into a variable
        • DECLARE studentName SET studentName TO Bob
    • selection and condition
      • A selection statement uses a condition to select, or determine, the next line of the program that is to be executed.
        • CALCULATE totalCost IF (totalCost > $10) THEN OUTPUT 'no delivery charge' ELSE OUTPUT '$5 delivery charge' ENDIF OUTPUT 'thankyou'
    • iteration
      • Iteration is also called repetition and is used when something is repeated over and over again, so anything where the program goes round in a loop.
        • DECLARE count SET count TO 0 FOR count = 1 to 10 OUTPUT count END FOR OUTPUT ‘finished’
    • modularisation
      • Modularisation is used to reduce the complexity of a system by deconstructing it into independent units or modules
        • FUNCTION delivery_charge CALCULATE totalCost IF (totalCost > $10) THEN OUTPUT ‘no delivery charge’ ELSE OUTPUT ‘$5 delivery charge’ ENDIF OUTPUT ‘thankyou’ END FUNCTION
  2. coding constructs

    • IF statements
      • If and if-else statements are used in Python to perform conditional execution of code. They allow you to specify one or more conditions and depending on whether the conditions are met or not, the code inside the if or if-else block is executed.
        • if condition: # code to be executed if condition is True
    • FOR loops
      • A FOR loop is a common control structure in Python that allows you to repeat a block of code a specific number of times.
        • for item in sequence: # Code to be executed for each item in the sequence
    • Additional coding constructs
  3. Existing Text Based Adventure Games

    • Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
      • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text adventure game is a classic 1984 interactive fiction game designed by Douglas Adams and Steve Meretzky, and published by Infocom
        • strengths:
          • authentic humour and writing
          • innovative scene structure
        • weaknesses:
          • Frustrating puzzles
          • time-sensitive traps
    • Forests of Lyrica
      • Forest of Lyrica combines exploration, item management, and combat in a small, interactive fantasy world. Its grid-based map, RPG-inspired mechanics, and web-based accessibility make it both a playable adventure and a learning tool for aspiring game developers
        • strengths:
          • Easily accessible and lightweight
          • excellent educational blueprint
        • weaknesses
          • extreme simplicity and shortness
          • hardcoded logic scaling issues
  4. Idea for Story

    • Track Player Name
      • Use players.
        • What is your name?
    • Change to an escape story
      • A coastal town appears only during certain tides, and you’ve arrived on one of those rare nights. The townsfolk speak in riddles, hinting at a curse tied to the ocean’s whispers. Choices determine whether you uncover the truth, break the curse, or become part of the town’s ghostly history.
        • An example of an escape game is Pirate Treasure Hunt
    • Add health counter
      • This health counter will count how many wrong guesses the players take, they have two lives
        • One wrong answer, one life lost
  5. Self-Determined Criteria

    • Create an escape adventure game embossed with riddles
      • Use multiple side characters to play the game
      • Include an aesthetic feature such as ASCII
      • High stakes pressure by making each option have different outcomes whether negative or positive
  6. Prescribed Criteria

    • You must use variables that match your storyline
      • Match the variables to the storyline
      • Include variables such as questions or choices
      • The variables used must be related to the storyline
    • You must use a WHILE loop
      • Loop questions
      • Put a loop into the code
      • Use a WHILE loop
    • You must have at least two choices for each input (IE. Yes | No, Left | Right, Buy | Sell)
      • Each choice must be different
      • After each input, give two choices to the player
      • Use at least two choices for each input
    • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
      • Include multiple choice options
      • Include 10 variables
      • All variables must be different
