Evaluation of multi-store model
Support from case studies
- CASE OF HM
- Suggests that stores of memory are separate.
- Had brain surgery to relieve epilepsy - hippocampus removed (central to memory function)
- Could no longer form LTM
- Remembered things before his surgery
- STM was not damaged
- Sperling's sensory memory test
- Showed participants 3 rows of numbers and letters followed by a high, middle, or low tone. (Tone = indication of what they needed to remember.
- High = top row Middle = middle row Low = bottom row
- Most participants were able to recall the whole row that was sounded for them
- The tone was sending the info to the STM - supports idea of sensory register.
- Showed participants 3 rows of numbers and letters followed by a high, middle, or low tone. (Tone = indication of what they needed to remember.
- CASE OF HM
A weakness is that its too simplistic.
- Doesn't allow for different types of LTM & STM
Clive Waring = supports the weakness that it doesn't allow for different types of LTM & STM
- Lost his memory due to infection of the brain & was left with a 7 second STM
- Couldn't form long term memories; he would forget everything he learnt after 7 seconds.
- He was able to recognise his wife but acted as if he hadn't seen her for years.
- When asked if he could play the piano, he would say no however if he was sat infant of a piano he would play very well.
- Suggests that there are different types of STM
